Chess in the club and in class

The CHESS MONKEYS workbooks are made for teaching. Here we describe how a lesson is built: 45 or 60 minutes, the twelve methods you mark, and the times that follow that choice.

One lesson

  1. 0–5

    The piece cinema

From Level 3, with a move the children picture.

  2. 5–15

    Short exercise

  3. 15–30

    Longer exercise

  4. 20 minutes

Once a month a 20-minute method can replace the two blocks. The week of the plan that is replaced is then skipped. The remaining 5 minutes are added to the playing time.

  5. 30–42

    Playing

Including setting up and putting away. All pairs play the same position.

  6. 42–45

    Close

Two children say what they learned today.

How I plan my lessons

  • Change the methods of the two practice blocks every week. After four weeks the plan starts again.
  • When a new chapter starts in the workbook, use Thinking aloud together for the 10-minute block that week.
  • Once a month a 20-minute method can replace the two blocks. The week of the plan that is replaced is then skipped.
  • Motif detectives can take over the 15-minute block in any week.
  • If the group has chess twice a week, each lesson counts as one week of the plan.
