The piece cinema

5 minutes · all levels · picturing from memory

What the children learnremember a position and picture what happens after a move.

What you needtwo simple positions from the workbook. Each child has a cover sheet, the plastic sleeve with the sheet Empty diagram and a wipe-clean pen.

How it goes

  1. Everyone looks at the first position for 30 seconds. Then cover it. You ask, for example: “Where was the white rook?” Each child marks the square on their empty board and shows it to their partner. Then uncover and check.2 minutes
  2. The second position the same way, a little harder.3 minutes

Level 1 and 2

few pieces and only one question.

From Level 3

show the position at the front. Then cover it or switch the picture off. After that, name a move: “The knight goes to f5. What does it attack now?”

Tip

the position stays covered until everyone has answered. Watch this: after a move, the square the piece came from is empty.

In a large class

show the position at the front in every level. Then cover it or switch the picture off.
